Pune : In a major leadership transition within the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar, AVSM, VSM, has taken over as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of Southern Command. He succeeds Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain, AVSM, SM, who has assumed the role of Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
A veteran Armoured Corps officer, Lt Gen Pushkar was commissioned into the 74 Armoured Regiment in December 1988 after graduating from the National Defence Academy (NDA). Since then, he has served in a broad spectrum of operational, instructional, and staff appointments across different theatres. His distinguished career reflects extensive experience in commanding troops, managing large formations, and shaping military policy. Most recently, he commanded 2 Corps during Operation Sindoor, where he played a significant role in operational planning and execution.
His command experience includes leading an Armoured Regiment, an Independent Armoured Brigade, an Infantry Division, and a premier Strike Corps in the Western Sector. The officer has also held several important staff appointments, including Colonel Military Secretary, Colonel General Staff, Brigadier Quartermaster General, and Brigadier General Staff. He later served as Additional Director General, Armoured Corps, and Director General, Territorial Army. He has also been associated with the training of future officers as an instructor at the National Defence Academy.
The new Southern Command chief also possesses valuable international experience. He served with the Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan and later as Defence and Military Attaché at the Embassy of India in Moscow, with accreditation to Armenia and Belarus. Academically, he has attended some of India’s premier military institutions and earned postgraduate degrees in Strategic Studies, Management, and International Relations.
Lt Gen Pushkar is the recipient of several distinguished honours, including the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), the Chief of Army Staff Commendation, and three Army Commander’s Commendations. After assuming charge, he paid homage to the brave soldiers at the Southern Command War Memorial and received a Guard of Honour.
